Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge Château de Beaucastel 2020
At the northern tip of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, between Orange and Avignon, Château de Beaucastel stands as one of the undisputed benchmarks of the Southern Rhône. The estate's history stretches back to the sixteenth century, and since the early twentieth century, the Perrin family has guided it to legendary status. Today, successive generations continue to uphold the founding vision: farming 110 hectares of vines organically — a commitment made as early as the 1950s — while cultivating all 13 grape varieties permitted by the appellation.
The 2020 vintage is a masterclass in complexity and balance. The blend brings together 30% Grenache and 30% Mourvèdre as its backbone, complemented by Syrah, Counoise, and a range of other permitted varieties including a notable proportion of white grapes. Each variety is hand harvested and vinified separately — Mourvèdre and Syrah in oak foudres, the others in traditional cement tanks — before a meticulous assemblage by the Perrin family, followed by twelve months of ageing in oak.
The result is a wine of remarkable depth and refinement. The nose opens on intense aromas of red and dark fruit — cherry, raspberry, blackberry — interwoven with garrigue, dried flowers, pepper, spice, and a subtle earthy complexity that is unmistakably Beaucastel. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet precise, with an exceptionally silky texture, finely chiselled tannins, and a freshness that underpins the whole structure. The finish is long, mineral, and harmonious.
Rated 96 points by Decanter and 95–97 by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, the 2020 Beaucastel is best enjoyed from 2025 onwards and has the potential to evolve beautifully for another two decades. Decant generously and serve around 16–17°C alongside roasted lamb, game, or aged cheeses.
Insert some garlic in the leg of lamb, moisten it with white wine, and add some salt, pepper and butter and you can put the meat in the oven. During cooking, every fifteen minutes, moisten it so that a fine, juicy and golden crust gets formed little by little. A red Châteauneuf-du-Pape by Château de Beaucastel will make the dish and your evening incredible.
